How does Amerex Super D Dry Powder Work?

Super D Dry Powder works by smothering and cooling the fire, preventing the metal from continuing to burn. When applied:

  • It forms a thick, heat-absorbing crust over the burning metal, cutting off oxygen and stopping combustion.
  • The powder absorbs and dissipates heat, reducing the risk of reignition.
  • These properties allow for a 1800+° F fire to cool to safe temperatures over time.

This suppression method ensures rapid, effective containment of Class D fires in CNC machines, collection bins, and drums.

Advantages:

  • Designed for extreme temperatures – Effective on fires that burn at thousands of degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Non-reactive with burning metals – Unlike water or CO₂, it won’t cause violent flare-ups.
  • Forms a stable protective barrier – Prevents oxygen from reaching the fire, stopping combustion.

Disadvantages:

  • Limited to Class D fires – Not suitable for flammable liquids (Class B) or electrical fires (Class C).
  • Not effective for all combustible metals – Some metals, like lithium, may require additional testing under specific conditions.
  • Cleanup Required – Leaves behind a solid crust that will require cleanup upon effectively suppressing the fire and protecting your machine. This is true for both handheld extinguishers and automatic fire suppression systems.

Is Amerex Super D Dry Powder Dangerous?

No, Amerex Super D is specifically designed for safety when used properly. Unlike other suppression agents, it does not create additional risks when applied to Class D fires. However, proper training and handling are essential:

  • Always store in a dry environment to prevent caking or degradation.
  • Use only on appropriate metals to ensure effectiveness.
  • Wear protective equipment when applying manually to avoid exposure to airborne particulates.

When used as part of an automatic suppression system, like Firetrace’s Class D Fire Suppression System, Super D provides hands-free, reliable protection, eliminating the need for human intervention during a fire.
